8 Reasons Why a Generic Pre-Use Safety Check Template isn’t the Best

8-Reasons-why-our-Inpsections-are-BetterIf you are responsible for the health and safety of your warehouse or logistics facility, you've probably checked out some of the free Pre-use inspection checklist solutions available on the internet. These generic templates are a good start but it does have some disadvantages which is why SG World have developed a unique pre-use inspection checklist solution.

New call-to-action

1. One size doesn’t always fit all

There are many types of specialist Manual Handling and Lifting Equipment – VNA trucks, MEWPs, scissor lifts, pallet trucks, LLOP, stackers, tugs, . They are not the same and will have different safety features that need checking out. Having a checklist tailored specifically for that product means the operator knows exactly what they need to be looking for during their safety check.

2. Paperwork or paper that works?

Most pre-use checks are done on a daily basis and that starts to generate a lot of loose sheets of A4 which need to be stored and easily accessed for any future investigations. SG World’s pre-use inspection checklists come in a unique bound chequebook format which keeps your checklist documentation neat and orderly.

3. Write it once, create two records!

So you’ve got your completed A4 checklist, where does it go next? It needs to stay in situ with the vehicle so people can see it’s status but you also need a central record. What if it’s lost, damaged or not returned? Do you want to take the chance you don’t have a full, up-to-date pre-use inspection safety record if there’s an accident?

SG World’s pre-inspection checklist design means the operator fills in the information once and a duplicate copy is automatically created. That’s one copy to stay with the equipment and one which stays in the book for your central records.

4. Make it obvious

So you’ve got your A4 Sheet which will tell operators and supervisors whether your equipment is safe to use – how do you make it really obvious? SG World’s pre-use inspection pads incorporate a distinct green or red pass/fail notice which displays in a hi-vis yellow, plastic wallet so you can see at a glance whether the equipment is safe to use.

5. Stay up to date with the latest regulatory requirements

There is a large body of Health and Safety regulations which govern your responsibilities for keeping your equipment maintained and safe :

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • The Provision and Use of Workplace Equipment Regulations
  • The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations
  • The Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations
  • The Noise at Work Regulations
  • The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations
  • The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations

We keep an eye on the latest regulatory guidance making sure our inspection products are up to date and give businesses a best practice pre-use inspection procedure.

6. Send out a safety message

It’s not easy getting people to follow health and safety procedures and a piece of A4 paper doesn’t convey the same gravitas as a dedicated checklist which can be branded with your company logo. It tells your workforce that you are investing in your pre-use checklist because you take Health and Safety seriously.

7. Fighting the elements

A warehouse or supply yard is a demanding environment potentially subject to the elements – wind, rain and even sun occasionally! A piece of A4 paper isn’t going to fare well under these conditions. SG Word’s checklist comes with it’s own protective cover so your documentation stays safe and legible.

8. Because you're worth it

OK – SG World aren’t giving away our pre-use inspection solutions for free. However over 52 million forklift inspections have been carried out using our market leading pre-use safety inspection solution in the UK alone because Health & Safety Managers recognise value for money and a good investment. Depending on volume, protecting your forklifts and other equipment can be for a few pence per inspection.

But don't take our word for it, order one of our free inspection sample books to see the difference.
