FFI – what do people want?

With the FFI appeal process due for an overhaul, Health and Safety at Work magazine tested the water with a Twitter Poll asking for opinions on what the HSE should do with FFI.

Since its introduction FFI has had its share of detractors so it’s probably no surprise that only 14% of respondents agreed that the scheme should stay as it is. The most popular opinion was to scrap the scheme completely with 38% of the vote. Circa 29% of the vote wanted the level of the trigger to be increased. FFI currently comes into play with a notice of contravention, this threshold could be increased to improvement and enforcement notices. Lowering the hourly rate from £129 attracted 19% of the vote, some voices in the industry see the fee as a “stealth tax”.
