School Accident Prevention H&S Myths #2 - Test Tube Tall Tales

SG World are all about solutions that keep students safe and sound at school. Accidents happen and must be managed and reported but even we recognize you can have too much of a good thing. In this blog series we'll be mythbusting some of the stories you will have seen in the press where schools look like they're taking H&S a bit too far.

Health and safety at work legislation is about reducing death, serious injury and ill health in workplace, including schools. It is about taking the necessary action to reduce significant risks - it is not about banning activities. Let's address the myth that health and safety rules are stopping classroom experiments.

What the HSE say: Hands-on lessons are an essential part of learning. They bring science to life and also teach kids how to handle dangerous substances safely.

Classroom demos can be spectacular - just ask HSE Chair Judith Hackitt. Earlier this year she 'set her hands alight' - safely - to show science and sensible risk management in action!

There's no reason why health and safety should stop schools carrying out science experiments. They can help children learn how to manage risk - and all that's required in most cases are a few sensible precautions.

SG World offer schools a range of safeguarding solutions including accident and incident reporting systems and software.
